I found a weird big black bug! Is it an Asian longhorned beetle?

It might be an Asian longhorned beetle, so it is good that you are being observant. Learn more about identifying the Asian longhorned beetle, and potentially reporting your suspicious insect, at beetlebusters.info.

What is going on in Worcester right now? Have they cut down more trees?

The fight against the Asian longhorned beetle is ongoing, and Worcester has a long path ahead of it. One excellent resource for updates and factual information is the Massachusetts Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program website where you can find maps, public meeting times, and other information.

How can I prevent this from happening in my community?

Here are three simple things you can do.

  • Learn to recognize the Asian longhorned beetle, so that if there is an infestation, it can be found and eliminated rapidly.
  • Avoid spreading pests by not moving firewood and tell others about the importance of buying only local wood for their campsites or wood stoves.
  • If you have a forum for showing Lurking in the Trees to the public- such as if you are a scoutmaster, teacher, extension agent, or campsite manager- please email us to request your own DVD.

Unfortunately, these invasive pests often spread widely before they're reported by the public to the authorities. We're working hard to prevent that from happening in the future.
